But the system works well for this level and difficulty of game and the dice symbols really add some interesting outcomes. In reality, nothing you do is going to stop the Vikings from taking a city at the start of the game. The communities there were violently disrupted by the arrival of this new culture and military force. The first time playing the game, the event cards played by opponents come as a surprise that throws a twist into your plans.

There are also special event cards that can be played on your opponent's turn, reflecting various historical events such as the conversion of some Vikings to Christianity or the infighting between various English kingdoms. There’s history if you want some, but overall it’s an exceptional four-player team on team war game. The active faction player is allowed to ‘command’ the pieces of their teammate and move them and battle with them freely. I really like how Academy Games has created a cool historic based game that is simple to learn and fun to play. Even if you don’t know anything about the Viking invasion of England (or care to), the game is still loads of fun.

Despite my son enjoying the game and asking to play it again, I am a bit disappointed that he has not experienced it with 4 players yet. Place a Viking Control token on each of the marked spaces along the bottom of the board and put the round track marker on Year 1. The “Viking Age Expansion” adds several new scenarios, game components mechanics, and victory conditions to the 878 Vikings game, such as Christian Churches, Pagan Relics, Viking Settlements, Holy Places, and much more! The setup is the same regardless of player count due to 3-4 players simply divides the control of each side.

After a couple of battles, if the English player is not channeling Monty Python’s Holy Grail “Run Away! If a faction draws no movement cards, they reveal that hand and shuffle into the deck, drawing three new cards. When both factions of a side (English or Viking) have played their truce cards, the game will end on that round! Once drawn, the appropriate figures are placed on the card drawn and the Leader token is placed next to it. Cards in a player’s hand could also be event cards, which provide significant bonuses and additional tactics.Vikings is a historical area control game representing the years after 878 AD in the northeastern coast of England. When playing as the English, I always feel dread as I see the huge Viking armies taking city after city, but also anticipation as I see opportunities constantly presenting themselves. The English start with control of the entire continent, but every round, a new Viking leader invades from the sea and threatens to conquer England! You will not easily reach your 40 Thegn unit limit, so even though the Housecarls are stronger units than the Thegn, don’t be afraid to choose to lose some Housecarls. I love Academy Games (and any other publisher that does) for allowing designers the space to add some context to the game they’ve designed.

The victory conditions also determine that each side really focuses exactly on what it needs: Vikings shutting down reinforcements of English towns and the English mustering a successful counterattack. Moving units to non-city spaces also has the added benefit of allowing you to command-decision there, since you may only command-decision to a Shire already occupied by your units. It is fairly easy to reach your max, especially if you control Wessex for the first Rounds of the game.

In looking at the picture, you would assume that the Battle went to the English, and it did, but it wasn’t as easy as you would think. Draw Cards Phase: As the name implies, a player ends their turn by drawing back up to a hand of 3 cards. In 878: Vikings – Invasions of England, players control the invading Vikings or the English nobles who are trying to withstand the invasion.
