Description

If it is your first chess book, it is going to do a better job explaining basic moves than any other book. It has the the thoughts of a human master-level player, which are, mistakes and all, better than the all computer analysis lines that anyone can generate.

The games in part three have lessons more subtle than the first two part, I think the theme is that good positional development naturally leads to tactical opportunities. Above all others I'd recommend this to people who have a bit of chess interest but think reading a book will be too hard. It would be nice to have this as an e-book with annotated pgns, but apparently his widow has not been very receptive to publishing deals. Perhaps it isn't as timeless as it once appeared to me, but it should prove useful to any aspiring player wanting to better understand how to develop logical plans, moves, and thought processes in chess. This makes it easy to follow along and reap the rewards of his wisdom, assimilating what makes a bad move, a good move, or a winning move. Does a good job of explaining the ideas behind moves (especially opening moves) in easy to understand language. Irving Chernev, Logical Chess: Move by Move (1957) has earned its place as a classical text that is often recommended to players who seek to improve their chess skills. Aready black will be feeling some pressure, and you can try bringing a knight and/or rook into the attack from there. Chernev had a good point, but personally this 'fixation' with not moving pawns in front of castled king held me back for a while.

I've noticed that I can go through some variations on my head without moving the pieces and without feeling overwhelmed.

The author can better relate to the reader and provide them the sort of insight that may be lost on stronger players. Perfect if you're the type of player who struggles to decide on a move after the first handful, and the usefulness of the main openings(e4,d4) gets consistently drilled into the reader every time a new game arises. Now I realice that this comes not only by getting used to read the variations but also because of the better understanding of what's going on in the board. Even if, on the small chance, you don't learn anything, the author's enthusiasm for the game is infectious.
