About this deal

I also am absolutely appalled you would take someone else’s SA story and make it the background story for a serial killer. Carlie coped with moving from her home in Sydney, Australia to a small village in England to live with a stranger.

The Holden family, Gray, Piper and their two teenagers have vanished from their luxurious Art Deco coastal home. I feel I should point out that the descriptions of the murders were quite graphic, not Karin Slaughter intensity level, but getting up there. You know film noir when you see it: the shadowed setting; the cynical detective; the femme fatale; and the twist of fate. But again, if these two characters are set for a series, then it all makes a bit more sense, I suppose. I cannot tell you if this will work for you (and my editor’s brain and Virgo soul are both fretting over Smith’s stance on revision), but I do think that many of his methods are worth a try for you pantsers out there, perhaps for the plotters too. Fiona was selected for McDermid’s prestigious New Blood panel at the 2017 Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, where her novel was nominated for a Dead Good Reader Award for Most Exceptional Debut. And Smith himself would be the first to tell you to adapt them to your own purposes (which this editor will tell you should include revision).

Piper’s marital issues; her husband’s ‘dodgy’ business dealings; a daughter who is far from perfect but, who comes across as an angel. In my most humble opinion, not as good as ‘When I Was Ten‘ but despite my nitpicking still entertaining and enjoyable. Es un retelling de Romeo y Julieta, es decir NO HAY FELICES PARA SIEMPRE (aunque bajo mi punto de vista, sí que es un felices para siempre! This was my foray back into reading after a few weeks of illness and it wasn’t only that I was so delighted to be able to be able to read again but this novel was a 5 star read. Their mobile phones are still charging, school bags are by the door ready to go, kettle is still warm and cars are still in the garage. All of these characters are hiding something, there are so many secrets and lies your head will be spinning. multilayered thriller with lives and pasts colliding, with very complex characters with extremely complicated backgrounds and even more tangled relationships. Just to forewarn you, upon completion I discovered that one of the main characters – DC Saul Anguish – featured in both Rattle and The Collector (both of which I have yet to read) and this book does contain spoilers relating to his childhood and adolescence.

What develops and unfolds is told in non-linear timeline and from several perspectives and which flows extremely well. I struggled to follow the jumping timeline occasionally and didn’t connect with any of the characters. An excellent psychological thriller which draws you in from the start and keeps you hooked with its unpredictable twists and turns. Carlie continues her journey of love and friendship, building relationships, learning to trust and growing into a relatable lovable character.Featuring the work of 30 world famous artists such as Alejandro Garcia Restrepo, Heiko Mueller, Leslie ODell, Mojo Wang, Fernando Forero and Alessandro Sicoldr with accompanying stories often drawn from their personal lives that led to the creation such disturbing artwork. We’re easily put in the picture of someone who’s not bound by the rules and believes in right and wrong more than ‘justice’.

As Julianne acknowledges at the start of the book, their friendship was forged in the bonds of motherhood, Piper having rescued her from the deep depression which she sunk into after the deaths of her parents in a bizaree and tragic chainsaw accident. This is the paperback Kill Team supplement originally found in the Kill Team: Into the Dark boxed set, now available on its own. Piper's husband is Gray, his car is unusually parked on the drive, breakfast is still on their table but none of the family are present.

I was intrigued for the plot after reading its blurb; a case of missing family with a three-words found scrawling by blood on the mirror at their house and a brilliant detective in charge who was said to have a dark past. Is Riva , the teen, the golden girl at the exclusive school which she attends, or is that just a facade as well? Saul is unaccountably drawn to ‘Blue’ as he refers to her and there is certainly a strange, edgy chemistry between them. Justice may not always be served in fiction, or in real life, but this time there is a certain satisfaction to the ultimate scene of the book, a very fitting ending to a fantastic read.
