About this deal

In 1983, a barnacle-covered, Citizen Challenge Diver from 1977 was retrieved from an Australian beach. Much to the wide-eyed surprise of its discoverers, this watch was still running as if nothing had happened as its case protected its movement from water and dirt. This awe-inspiring find inspired Citizen’s newest dive watch, the Promaster Mechanical Diver 200M Blue Ref. NB6021-68L, which is a modern take on the original 1977 dive watch. Now Citizen revisits the Challenge Diver – and memorialises the barnacle-covered watch – with the Promaster Mechanical Diver 200m “Fujitsubo”. The new watch retains the retro design and dimensions but has been thoroughly upgraded with modern materials and mechanics, including a titanium case and movement resistant to magnetic fields of up to 16,000 A/m (or about 200 Gauss). Interestingly, this Miyota 90S5 found in a Kurono watch has no markings. Not sure how that plays into the date code theory.

Typically, letter codes like this end up being manufacturing date codes, but it does not make sense with the 3 known codes here. Iida Tonooka Factory does make sense, but only for the I.T stamps. As soon as more information is discovered, it will be posted here! If it is significant, an entire post will be created on the topic. Thanks to all who have helped! Date Code Theory: The I.T stamped movement featured in this caliber listing was found in a model that was released 0n 8/15/2022. The watch includes paperwork indicating that it was originally sold in 12/2022. So, with the date code theory, that would place the “T” at 2022 (maybe 2021, but doubtful). If you’re looking to step into the realm of lightweight sports watches and don’t want to blow the budget, you could seriously do much worse than the Citizen Promaster Mechanical Diver 200m. Especially when the next step up is the Tudor Pelagos 39, which is exactly six and a half times more expensive. I cannot express enough how impressive this watch is on its own, and its humble price point just amplifies that. What do you think of the NB6021-17E? Have you had a chance to try it? Have you bought one for yourself? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. The case of the lightweight NB6021-68L measures 41mm in diameter and 12.3mm in height. Although the unidirectional bezel may appear a bit wider than the middle case, both have precisely the same width. The brushed finishing on the case and the polished outer surface of the bezel is also aesthetically captivating. Furthermore, the bezel has a spot-on alignment, ensuring safe diving. While we’re on the topic of the prefecture of Nagano, this would be a good time to point out that “Miyota” is the name of a town in Nagano. Citizen Watches: How Do They Compare? The 2000 ASPEC World Time, the first watch to apply the Citizen Duratect surface-hardening technology to create a material later called Super Titanium As of the writing of this post, the 9051 is only available in upcoming Citizen models and is not being offered for sale by Miyota yet.

On November 5, 2021, the Citizen Series 8 line was launched with the “831” series of integrated bracelet dress watches containing the caliber 9051. If there are more models not mentioned here, please add them in the comments below. I.T Marking: Visually, the Fujitsubo is simple and almost generic, but paradoxically that’s the appeal. The Fujitsubo is the most restrained mechanical dive watch in Citizen’s line up, both in terms of size and style – good news for anyone who wants something more minimal than its recent offerings.

The bezel action is fine, but not as refined as Seiko’s. The soft knurling on the bezel makes it rather hard to get a good grip. Some people don’t like the bevelling on the crystal, but I love it! I think it is a nice touch.

You get a 3 year warranty-certificate for your new timepiece. If there is any problem with the mechanism, this certificate garanties a 100 % protection- meaning we take care of the technical integrity inbetween these 3 years. As a result, the minute hand and the “lollipop” seconds feels a bit derivative, but combined with the extra-wide, typically 1970s hour markers, the overall look still manages to be original and appealingly retro. Citizen (Miyota) claims the average accuracy of the calibre 9051 to be within -10 to +20 seconds per day (not to be confused with the caliber 9050 which offers an accuracy of -5 to +10 sec/day). This information is provided with a special note stating the following: At arm’s length, the Fujitsubo looks clean and traditional, but up close the dial and bezel reveals a few quirks. The hour hand is especially unusual with the familiar “Mercedes” tip that’s mostly associated with a famous Swiss brand. That said, the dial is faithful reproduction of that on the 1977 original, a period where brands borrowed liberally from each other – just look at the number of 1970s sports watches with integrated bracelets in every level of the price spectrum. Citizen Promaster (ref: NB6004-08E), Citizen Promaster Titanium Diver (ref: NB6021-17E), Citizen Promaster Mechanical Diver 1977 Challenger 200m reissue (ref: NB6021-17E, NB6021-68L), Citizen Series 8 aka 831 (ref: NB6010-81E, NB6010-81L, NB6012-18L) (Please add your watch in the comments below!)For this reason, I.T and all other markings are still unsolved and Caliber Corner will be reaching out to Citizen Watch Co. for any information they are willing to provide. At 41 mm wide and 12.3 mm tall, the Fujitsubo is one of the thinnest dive watches in this price segment. In fact, it’s even thinner than the vintage original. And it’s also slimmer than its most obvious rival, the Seiko 1965 Diver’s Modern Re-Interpretations “62MAS”, which is about 1 mm taller. On March 23, 2022, Citizen reiterated (almost word for word from the quote above) the magnetic resistant properties of the 9051 in the official press-release announcing the Promaster 1977 Challenger reissue. One of Citizen’s earlier dive watches, the Challenge Diver of 1977 is rated to 150 m – but it evidently can withstand more than pressure under water. In 1983, a long-submerged example was discovered at Long Reef Beach in Sydney, Australia. And despite being encrusted with barnacles, it was in working condition according to Citizen. The lume is not as bright as Seiko’s but seems to last longer. It is legible, even after hours in the dark.

In March 2021, Citizen launched a Promaster titanium diver powered by the caliber 9051. From the official announcement:Accuracy measured in a stationary position. Due to the characteristics of mechanical watches, daily accuracy may be outside stated figures due to variations in conditions of use (including length of time worn, the position of the watch, wrist movement, and the winding of the spring.”– source Replacement Prices: And it will also be lightweight. As is convention for most of Citizen’s mid-range dive watches, the case is Super Titanium, the brand’s proprietary alloy that has undergone surface hardening, leaving it five times more scratch resistant than steel. We are also able to offer an exchange to a different product if required, please specify this when returning your product. So, anything after that will eliminate the date code theory: MNOPQRSTUVWXYZ (letters that can’t be months).
