For example, 1000 lumens with a coverage of 1 square meter is 1000 lux. (1000/1) If you have 1000 lumens and your light covers 4 square meters, then it’s 250 lux. Lumens & Lux Explained

A helmet light helps spot the landing when the bar light is shining up in a tree somewhere. All-in-one Options Consequently, the amount of lumens a light offers tends to be the headline specification because a larger number essentially promises that the light will be brighter.Fall is officially here, and it’s beginning to show. As the days grow shorter and it becomes more and more difficult to squeeze in a ride after work, you might want to consider embracing the dark (if you haven’t already). Night riding allows you to put in some miles whenever you can find time, and it’s a great way to mix up your typical ride if it’s starting to become a little stale. Over two hours is a superb run time for 12,000 lumens and lower modes extend battery life considerably while still projecting ample light.

These two measures of light are related. Lumens is the total light emitted by your bike light. Lux is the brightness divided by the area it covers. Run time can vary a great deal between lights and it is minimised the more power the LEDs are pumping out. We’ve listed the run time for each of the lights in this list at max power.

We also had concerns about the long-term durability of the mount, but Hope’s after-sales support is generally very well regarded. It casts a wider spread of light down the trail than its MK11 predecessor and the LED’s hue is beautiful. Being very fussy, the beam’s spread could be wider closer to its source. For urban commuting, 200 lumens should be sufficient. We would suggest a front light with a minimum of 400 lumens for riding on unlit roads. Included in the box is a helmet mount, and we think the X-Power works best as a lid light. It has four steady and two flashing modes, plus an SOS mode.

Beam pattern refers to how the lights disperse light across the trail, and it can be just as important as lumens when it comes to how well you can see. Run time is around two hours on full power. When it comes time to recharge, Exposure has its own proprietary cable. The X2’s single-head unit button functionality is extended by a remote with two buttons. Ian Linton / Our Media As a relatively inexpensive high-powered light, the Meteor Storm Pro is best suited to riders not looking to get too rowdy on the trail – we’d say it’s perfect for people who dabble in night riding rather than those looking to go out on regular epics. How we tested

Moon Meteor Storm Pro details and specification

It’s very easy to use and the battery life is solid, if not exceptional, at 1 hour 25 minutes on full power. The low-power mode caught us by surprise on occasion, though – once the battery goes under 30 per cent charge it’s no longer possible to select a higher-power mode from a lower one. Lights will often have either a spot or flood pattern. Spot patterns highlight details in front of you in great detail. Flood patterns disperse the light over a wider area and can give you a better sense of what’s around you. Some lights use a mixture of both. Class-leading illumination, top-quality construction and clever tech make this all-in-one light well worth its high price tag. The beam’s colour is fairly harsh white, which caused some contrast. It wasn’t as harsh as bluer lights, but not as gentle as ones with green or yellow tints. Detail on the trail was impressive, though.

The light comes with three modes. These can be controlled via its central button or the See.Sense app. The app will let you choose between six modes and a variety of features including a braking mode and theft alarm. It’s good to remember your battery life so you don’t get caught in the spook-zone. Alex Evans / Our Media

While power feels less than claimed, it’s ample to ride gnarly trails with confidence, although a better beam spread would be helpful in tight turns.
