During November the creamy-yellow dot of Saturn will first appear in the lower part of the southern sky after dusk. The moon's next visit with a planet will be on Tuesday evening, Nov. 21. Tonight, the 67%-illuminated, waxing gibbous moon will shine a palm's width to the lower right of distant blue Neptune. (Image credit: Chris Vaughan/Starry Night)

Star projectors come in different shapes, specifications and sizes because they serve various purposes. Some models are designed as night lights for children, so they are simpler and prioritize creating a pleasant atmosphere rather than realistic star patterns. On the other hand, there are highly accurate star projectors that provide a scientific representation of the night sky, giving you the experience of being inside a planetarium. With three ridges on the bottom, you can easily adjust this projector to project at three different angles, including upwards onto a ceiling. It combines an LED and a direct laser diode to create dynamic RGB projections with moving patterns. It's portable and convenient to use thanks to the USB power cable, allowing you to power it from a computer or portable battery. Depending on the model you choose, star projectors can recreate the night sky accurately from the comfort of your own home, surrounding you with stars, constellations and double as galaxy projectors. Whether you’re hosting a space-themed party, learning about the cosmos or simply looking for a way to help you fall asleep, star projectors can do it all. The best star projectors can either be used as home planetariums, projecting realistic night skies and galaxies indoors, or they can serve as soft, glowy night lights for adults or children. Considering its reasonable price tag and the many educational benefits it offers, we believe this projector is a worthwhile investment for homeschooling or simply learning about space with your child.

Sega Toys Homestar FluxGreat for recreating a realistic-looking night sky inside. It's on the pricier end of the market but the option to upgrade your disc collection is attractive. The night sky representation is about as realistic as it gets.★★★★½

The 2.0 version of this projector includes the BlissLights smartphone app, which connects via Bluetooth. With the app, you can choose from seven different effects modes, adjust the intensity of the projector, control the brightness of the laser and even set the rotation speed. You also have the option to create your own custom color blend using the app. However, the stars will always appear either green (for the 'Classic Green Stars' variant) or blue (for the 'Cobalt Blue Stars' variant). In theory, yes. Most models of star projectors run from mains AC power or DC through a USB port, so they will run as long as they are plugged in. Some models are battery-powered, meaning you run the risk of the battery running out of power overnight.

On Saturday evening, Nov. 4 at 6:56 p.m. EDT or 22:56 GMT, Algol will be at its minimum brightness. At that time it will be located in the lower part of the northeastern sky. Five hours later the star will return to full intensity from a perch nearly overhead. Observers in more westerly time zones can see the latter stages of the brightening. Saturn's rings will be tilting more edge-on to Earth every year until the spring of 2025 and are already noticeably less wide. Quality optics and good seeing conditions will allow you to see the dark, narrow Cassini Division in the rings and the wedge of shadow that Saturn's globe casts upon their eastern side. Watch for a handful of Saturn's moons arrayed as tiny dots around the planet. The waxing first quarter moon will hop past Saturn on November 19-20.

Aurora Borealis Northern Lights Star ProjectorIt's highly customizable, the patterns are realistic and the music rhythm mode is impressive. This is one of our favorites. ★★★★½ Io's shadow will rotate into view at 5:41 p.m. EST (or 10:41 GMT). Then the Great Red Spot will appear by about 7 p.m. EST (or 00:00 GMT on Nov. 30) and begin to follow Io's shadow. Io's bright dot will break free of Jupiter at 7:11 p.m. EST (or 00:11 GMT). Io's shadow will complete its passage at 7:50 p.m. (or 00:50 GMT), leaving the spot to cross alone until about 10:40 p.m. EST (or 03:40 GMT). There are 30 additional discs available when you visit Astrial, Sega Toys' official online store. Simulations of the aurora borealis and the aurora australis are perhaps the highlights. There is a disc that displays the planets of the solar system as well, but it is the ones that show galaxies, nebulas and other NASA-based imagery that really stand out. For example, the North America nebula as taken by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and the weird seven-star system called Jabbah (officially called Nu Scorpii and IC 4592) as imaged by NASA's WISE mission. You can also buy disks that simulate fireworks, 'night jellyfish' and a hot-air balloon festival. National Geographic Astro Planetarium would make a nice space gift for a budding astronomer. It has great functionality, with a time and date selector and a built-in speaker.★★★★½
